From this morning's CQOD:

"Must we then have strange music...unlike the world's music, and a special language with an imagery that illuminates the minds only of the religious? Or dare we do what our Lord did, and see the Name hallowed in all life that is real and honest and good? Indeed, it was a scandal to the religious men of Jesus' day when they saw what He did with sacred things. With Jesus all life was sacred and nothing was profane until sin entered in. And so it was that the word "common," which used to mean profane and unclean, became the New-Testament word for the Communion of Saints and for the fellowship of the Holy Spirit."
~Howard Hewlett Clark (1903-1983)

I get two daily emails--one is the CQOD, or Christian Quote of the Day, and the other is an etymology email, wherein a word is defined and the origins given, along with usage in a sentence. What a bonus it was today to have both elements in the same email! Plus, the content here is worth contemplating. How long have we Christians tried to wall ourselves up in our Christian "ghettos", trying by separation from the things of "the world" (as if that phrase were synonymous with "the devil") to keep ourselves from sin. And then we go about telling each other we are "building the Kingdom" in that way! As one of my closest friends would say, "How's that working for ya?" I'm guessing, just by looking around, that it's not working all that well. First of all, "sin" comes from the inside out; it's not like a contact allergy where if we "touch the unclean thing" we will become infected. We're supposed to have the Cure! How does one administer a cure if you can't touch the "patients"?! We need to be out amongst "the world", showing them by our love for God and each other that we have something worth looking into. Now, I know that most people who come here and read my rantings already know this, and that I'm probably just "preaching to the choir", so to speak, but seeing this quote this morning just...inspired me, I guess. Anyway, that's all for now.
