Happy New Year! I know I'm late getting started on the well-wishing, but I've been busy formulating and carrying out New Year's resolutions. Two of the main things I wanted to accomplish today were catching up on laundry and...um...coloring my hair. So I'm typing this with the coloring gloves on--what a treat. An interesting challenge, to be sure.

I did get the laundry caught up, thank you Jesus; about 7 loads worth. While doing so, a couple of interesting things occurred. I sat down and made up my list of New Year's resolutions, which I'll get to in a minute. The other was that I got a phone call from a very good friend who lives in Norway, Toni Johansen. She's American, her husband Espen is Norwegian. It felt a little Twilight Zone-ish to receive an international call while in the laundramat. I'm afraid I'm not quite so cosmopolitan as I'd like to think I am. Anyway, Toni called to let me know that she and her family will be in town at the end of January, which is cool because I was just thinking of taking a couple of days off at that time. They might even be moving here for good, if they can find work. It'd be nice to have them around.

OK, on to the resolutions list. I made a "top ten" list, in no particular order of significance:
1. Lose weight. I'd like to lose at least 50 fifty pounds this year, but any substantial weight loss will be considered a victory. I had thought, as an accountability thing, to post my actual weight in here and do a daily update, like Bridget Jones did in her movie diary, but that would be just too humiliating. I may, however, post each week or so a running tally of total lost. I'm still thinking about that.
2. Eat healthier. Part of the problem above is due to the thyroid problems I've had over the last year, but a lot of it stems from the fact that I tend to choose food by price rather than nutritional value. I hope to change some of those bad habits this year.
3. Go to the gym on a regular basis. I have found that simply paying for a gym membership has no value in and of itself--you actually have to show up and use some of the equipment once in a while.
4. Keep finances in better order (i.e.; checkbook). Fairly self-explanatory.
5. Keep apartment in order. Again with the self-explanatory.
6. Pay off debts/keep bills current. I'm not deep in debt; I just need to be more diligent about paying bills before having fun.
7. Be more diligent about Bible reading/prayer.
8. Reduce clutter
(in my apartment and in my life).
9. Make advances toward the goal of going to Ireland. This includes saving money, making contacts, getting a passport, etc.; anything to make the dream more concrete.
10. Be more intentional/evangelical. Hopefully, this will flow out of the overflow of a couple of the others. This, for me, has more to do with attitude than actions. If my life reflects what I believe, then I hope to see some fruit--i.e.; engaging people in God-centered conversations, helping others see that God doesn't hate them, that He exists and wants them to know Him as He truly is.

Well, that's not so much, eh? I have purposely not quantified a lot of these goals--any steps toward maturity in these areas is a good thing and I tend to want to snap my fingers and be perfect. I'm close, but..... :^)
