I've been thinking in the back of my head for a day or so about Alan's latest post (of December 2nd), about being stuck in a rut, feeling pressure (whether from inside himself or outside) to have big numbers and/or something "exciting" going on at VBCC. Then last night I was reading in the Merton book (which I have ordered my own copy of, BTW) and came across something that I felt was very relevant to what Alan is going through. It resonates with me, as well, since I saw some people this weekend that I had known from the old "IC". Here's the quote:
"One of the basic questions is how not to make our institutions look dynamic or "with it". We have no obligation to look good on somebody else's terms. If we try doing that, we'll be out of date in three years. That's about how long these new groups last. We do have a real obligation to respond to the Word of God."
